Today, I want to take a moment to address a serious issue that recently came to my attention: rental scams.One of our for sale listings was falsely advertised as a rental online. Thankfully, a concerned individual reached out to verify the listing, but many people don’t, and that’s when they fall victim.
How the Scam Works
Scammers take legitimate for sale listings and post them as rentals, asking for deposits or fees before you’ve even seen the property. Once they have your money, they disappear.
How to Protect Yourself
- Verify Listings: Always confirm with a trusted realtor or property manager before proceeding.
- Never Send Money Upfront: Don’t send deposits or fees until you’ve seen the property in person.
- Research the Property: If you see inconsistencies or find the property listed for sale elsewhere, be cautious.
If You Encounter a Scam
- Report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
- Contact local authorities if you’ve lost money.
- Flag the listing on the platform where you found it.
